Amazon TACoS Tracker — Total Advertising Cost of Sales by ASIN & Marketplace

4.8 / 5 from 6 Amazon sellers
Short answer

TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sales) = Amazon ad spend ÷ total sales × 100. ACOS tells you whether a campaign is efficient; TACoS tells you whether advertising is building sales that eventually arrive without ads. ListingPilot calculates TACoS automatically by joining Amazon Ads API spend with SP-API total sales, and splits organic vs sponsored sales for every ASIN and marketplace you connect.

Most Amazon sellers in India start with ACOS because it is the number Advertising Console puts in front of them. But ACOS only looks at sales that Amazon attributes to an ad click. It cannot tell you whether your total revenue is growing because ads are lifting organic rank — or whether the business only sells when you keep paying for clicks. That second question is what TACoS answers, and it is why brand and FBA sellers who scale ads past a few campaigns end up tracking it.

The problem is the data: ad spend lives in the Ads API, total sales live in SP-API order data, and Seller Central does not put them side by side per ASIN. This page explains how TACoS is calculated, how it differs from ACOS, how to decide what a good TACoS is for your margins, and how ListingPilot tracks it for you.

How TACoS is calculated

The formula is simple; getting consistent inputs is the hard part.

TACoS (%) = Total ad spend ÷ Total sales × 100
  • Total ad spend — everything you spent on Amazon ads for the period (Sponsored Products and any other ad types you run), from the Amazon Ads API.
  • Total sales — every ordered sale for the same ASINs, marketplace and dates (ad-attributed and organic), from SP-API.
  • Same basis on both sides — same date range, same marketplace and currency, and the same tax treatment (with or without GST). Mixing bases is the most common reason a hand-built TACoS sheet looks wrong.
Example only (illustrative numbers, not customer data)

One ASIN on amazon.in in a month: ad spend ₹40,000, ad-attributed sales ₹1,60,000, total sales ₹4,00,000. ACOS = 40,000 ÷ 1,60,000 = 25%. TACoS = 40,000 ÷ 4,00,000 = 10%. Organic (non-ad) sales = ₹2,40,000, i.e. a 60% organic share.

ACOS vs TACoS: what each one tells you

Use both. ACOS is the steering wheel for day-to-day bids; TACoS is the dashboard light that tells you whether the whole account is getting healthier. What a good TACoS looks like (and why there is no single number)

You will see single-number “good TACoS” rules of thumb quoted in seller forums and agency blogs. Treat them as anecdotes, not benchmarks: category, price point, margin and product stage move the answer a lot. A better approach is to derive your own ceiling from margin.

TACoS ceiling ≈ contribution margin before ads (% of sales) − target net margin (%)

Example only: if an ASIN keeps 30% of its selling price after COGS, Amazon fees and returns (before any ad spend), and you want to keep 10% as net margin, its TACoS ceiling is roughly 20%. On ₹4,00,000 of total sales at a 10% TACoS, that leaves about ₹4,00,000 × (30% − 10%) = ₹80,000 of contribution after ads.

Product stageWhere TACoS usually sits vs your ceilingWhat you want to see
LaunchCan sit above the ceiling for a planned, budget-capped periodOrganic share starting to rise week on week
GrowthMoving down toward the ceilingTotal sales up, TACoS flat or falling
Mature / defendComfortably below the ceilingStable organic share; ads defending rank, not carrying sales
Clearance / sale eventsMay spike temporarilyBack to trend within a few weeks after the event

Directional guidance only — not a benchmark. Your own margin data and trend are the reference.

How ListingPilot tracks TACoS for you

ListingPilot connects to Amazon through official OAuth — the Amazon Ads API for spend and ad-attributed sales, and the Selling Partner API (SP-API) for orders and total sales — so the two halves of the TACoS formula come from Amazon, not from spreadsheets you stitch together.

  • TACoS on the Ads dashboard — a TACoS KPI with the total revenue behind it and the change vs the prior period, sitting next to spend, ad sales, ACOS and ROAS for the selected marketplace and dates.
  • ASIN-level TACoS — the sales command table can show TACoS alongside revenue, ad spend, ad sales and ACOS per ASIN, and roll child ASINs up to parent ASIN or brand.
  • Organic vs sponsored split — the Sales Intelligence view switches between total, organic and sponsored sales, shows organic share per ASIN, and flags ASINs where most sales come from ads.
  • TACoS in automation rules — TACoS % is available as a condition in the bulk rules engine, next to ACOS, ROAS, spend, CTR and conversion rate. See the Amazon ads automation tool.
  • Per marketplace — amazon.in and each global marketplace you connect are tracked separately, so currencies and attribution are never blended.

Amazon TACoS — frequently asked questions

What is TACoS on Amazon?
TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sales) is your Amazon ad spend divided by your total sales — ad-attributed plus organic — for the same period, shown as a percentage. ACOS only compares ad spend with ad-attributed sales; TACoS shows how much of your whole Amazon revenue you are spending on ads.
How do you calculate TACoS?
TACoS = total ad spend ÷ total sales × 100, for the same date range and marketplace. Example only: ₹40,000 ad spend and ₹4,00,000 total sales gives a TACoS of 10%. Use the same tax basis (with or without GST) and the same currency on both sides of the formula.
What is a good TACoS for Amazon India sellers?
There is no universal good TACoS. Your ceiling comes from your margin: contribution margin before ads (as a % of sales) minus the net margin you want to keep. Launch products can run above that ceiling for a planned period; mature products should sit well below it. The trend matters more than one number — TACoS falling while total sales hold or grow is the healthy pattern.
What is the difference between ACOS and TACoS?
ACOS = ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales and measures campaign efficiency. TACoS = ad spend ÷ total sales and measures how dependent the whole business is on advertising. ACOS can improve while TACoS gets worse — for example when bid cuts shrink total sales — so track both.
How does ListingPilot track TACoS?
ListingPilot reads ad spend and ad-attributed sales from the official Amazon Ads API and total sales from the Amazon SP-API, then calculates TACoS for the selected marketplace and date range. TACoS appears as a KPI on the Ads dashboard (with total revenue and change vs the prior period), as a column in the ASIN-level sales table, and as a condition in ads automation rules. Ads-connected views are included from the Gold plan at ₹11,999/month.
Can ListingPilot split organic vs sponsored sales per ASIN?
Yes. The Sales Intelligence view separates total, organic and sponsored sales, with an organic share per ASIN and a flag when most of an ASIN’s sales come from ads. Organic here means sales not attributed to ads; until ads attribution has synced for a period, part of the mix can show as unattributed.
Can I track TACoS for amazon.in and other Amazon marketplaces?
Yes. TACoS is calculated per marketplace you connect — amazon.in plus global marketplaces such as US, UK, UAE and EU. Silver covers 1 marketplace, Gold up to 3 and Diamond up to 7. Keep each marketplace’s TACoS separate rather than blending currencies.
Why is my TACoS going up?
TACoS rises when ad spend grows faster than total sales or total sales fall while spend stays flat. Common causes: organic rank slipping (listing quality, reviews, stock-outs, lost Buy Box), spend scaled into low-converting terms, or a sale event where ads ramped before organic caught up. Check organic share per ASIN before cutting bids.
